FRIDAY ON STAGE: LOYLE CARNER

Honest may be a somewhat stale and worn-out description, but when it comes to Loyle Carner it doesn’t even suffice. Over jazzy samples that reminisces masters such as J. Dilla, Carners invokes the spirit of Common or NAS to deliver some of the most innovative, introspective and astonishingly truthful lyrics you’ve heard this side of the millennium. There is a certain thrill in watching an artist on the cusp of something big, which is way you can not miss Loyle Carner at Stay Out West this year.

FRIDAY ON STAGE: FATIMA

Fatima is a Swedish Soul/R&B star. People here might be sleeping on this, but fact still remains: Fatima is a renowned artist that made No. 10 in Rolling Stone Magazine Top 20 R&B albums of the year and was voted Album Of The Year at Gilles Peterson’s 2015 Worldwide Awards. An amazing singer that has collaborated with Floating Points, Dam Funk, Scoop DeVille and Flako and released music on prestigious labels such as Eglo Records and Blue Note. Fatima also happens to be a half-sister to the Swedish artist Seinabo Sey. What about the music? Erykah Badu, Solange Knowles, Angie Stone and Lauryn Hill are reoccurring references and although Fatima’s uniqueness is unquestionable, she like her equals operates in the borderland between jazz, soul, R&B and hip-hop.

SATURDAY ON STAGE LAFAWNDAH

Be prepared. This is sonically mind-blowing stuff. Lafawndah doesn’t exactly hold back with her percussion and synth heavy music that combines r’n’b and trip-hop sounds with Caribbean and Middle Eastern rhythms. The Egyptian-Iranian singer whose real name is Yasmin Dubois grew up in Paris and has since then lived most everywhere.
These days she’s based in London. Earlier this year Lafawndah released the debut album Ancestor Boy. Vice described it this way: ”It pieces together intricate, sculptural sounds from heritages that feel outside the western canon, but melds them into glitchy, left-field club-facing tracks.” We’re very excited to announce that she’s performing at Stay Out West.

SATURDAY ON STAGE NADIA TEHRAN

She started out playing punk in Jönköping, where she grew up. There’s still a lot of punk attitude to her music, even though the debut album Dozakh: All Lovers Hell could be described as a fusion of almost all kinds of music. Nadia Tehran raps, sings, speaks, screams, wails and no matter what she does you can’t shake it off.
On the opening track her father talks about how he almost died during his time the Iraq-Iran war, and the feeling of struggle and sorrow maintains until the last track. Explaining the album’s narrative to The Line of Best Fit Nadia Tehran said: ”It doesn’t come from an angry place, it comes from a sad place. And I think that’s important in a time where we dehumanize the people that are making the journey, by speaking about the profit or the loss of money that we’re going to make if they come here, instead of speaking about how we are viewing human lives.”
